Enhancing Patient Care: How REBECCA Plugin Helps Uncover Insights into Breast Cancer Patients’ Emotional Well-being from Online Activity

May 5, 2023

Breast cancer patients and survivors face not only physical challenges but also mental health issues during and after their treatments that can impact their recovery and quality of life. At REBECCA, we believe that it is essential to understand and address these challenges, which is why we have dedicated our research efforts to emotional well-being and overall quality of life for breast cancer patients.

As social media and online browsing become more popular, we see an opportunity to use the data generated by patients’ online activities to identify important indicators related to their emotional well-being and interests. By analysing this data, we hope to gain valuable insights that can help healthcare professionals improve patients’ mental health and overall quality of life.

To monitor the online activity of breast cancer patients, we have developed a user-friendly browser plugin that tracks patients’ social media interactions and web browsing. By analysing this data, we can extract important indicators related to emotions, stress levels, and interests. These indicators can be calculated by effectively monitoring and combining different types of online activity data, such as social media posts and comments, web browser histories, and search queries.

Our analysis has provided insights into what kind of indicators can be extracted from online user activity, and we have discovered that social media posts can convey the emotions of the patients, while the sites the patient visits can also provide hints into their emotional well-being and interests. With this knowledge, we hope to provide healthcare professionals with valuable insights that can help improve the mental health and overall quality of life for breast cancer patients and survivors.

We take the privacy and security of our patients very seriously, and all data collected is pseudonymised to protect patients’ identities. Patients can also customise their online activity tracking to ensure their privacy is respected.

Our ultimate goal is to use technology to make a difference in the lives of breast cancer patients, and we are excited to continue expanding the capabilities of our innovative tools to support the emotional well-being of patients.

As part of our ongoing efforts and to further advance our mission, our next step involves conducting additional studies and welcoming patient participation.
